Various works are studied, as is Gershwin's place in the development of the player piano, the film Rhapsody in Blue (the title of which comes from one of his most-enjoyed works), and his later influence on popular music. Library Journal's Barry Zaslow felt that in order to fully enjoy this volume, readers should have a musical background. Zaslow called the collection "an eclectic mix of essays."
