Schneiderhan, Wolfgang (Eduard)
Schneiderhan, Wolfgang (Eduard), noted Austrian violinist and pedagogue; b. Vienna, May 28, 1915. He studied violin mainly in Prague with Sevcik and Pisek, and later with Julius Winkler in Vienna. He was concertmaster of the Vienna Sym. Orch. (1933–37), then of the Vienna Phil. (1937–51); concurrently was first violinist in his own Scheiderhan Quartet. From 1951 he made tours of Europe as a soloist with the major orchs. He taught at the Salzburg Mozarteum (1938–56) and at the Vienna Academy of Music (1939–50); was on the faculty of the Lucerne Cons. (from 1949). With Rudolf Baumgartner, he helped to found the Lucerne Festival Strings in 1956. He married Irmgard Seefried in 1948. He was best known for his performances of the Viennese classics and contemporary music.
