Schnitter, David (Bertram)
Schnitter, David (Bertram), jazz tenor saxophonist; b. Newark, N.J., March 19, 1948. He attended Jersey City State Coll. (B.A., 1970). From 1970–74, he taught private students and performed around the N.Y. area. From 1975–80, he performed and recorded with Art Blakey, touring Europe, Japan, Brazil, and the U.S. During this time, he also recorded four albums as a leader and more than 30 records as a sideperson with Blakey, Red Rodney, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Charles Earland, and Johnny Lytle, among others. From 1980–82, he performed and recorded with Freddie Hubbard, touring the U.S. and Europe; he also performed in major European festivals and clubs as a leader. From 1982–90, he resided in Spain, teaching in seminars and performing with Johnny Griffin, Slide Hampton, Gary Bartz, Sal Nistico, Tete Montolieu, and Bobby Hutcherson. From 1991 to the present, he has performed in the N.Y. area with the Mickey Bass Quartet and the Jimmy Madison Quintet. He currently teaches Theory Performance and saxophone at the New School.
