d’Arányi (de Hunyadvar), Jelly (Eva)
d’Arányi (de Hunyadvar), Jelly (Eva), Hungarian-born English violinist, grandniece of Joseph Joachim and sister of Adila Fachiri; b. Budapest, May 30, 1893; d. Florence, March 30, 1966. She studied with Hubay in Budapest and Grunfeld in Vienna. In 1908 she made her debut in Vienna with her sister. In 1909 she played for the first time in England. After settling there in 1913, she became a naturalized British subject. She was the soloist in the premiere of Ravel’s Tzigane for Violin and Orch. (Paris, Dec. 7, 1924) and Vaughan Williams’s Concerto accademico for Violin and String Orch. (London, Nov. 6, 1925). On Nov. 26, 1927, she made her U.S. debut in recital in N.Y. In addition to her solo appearances, she also played in a trio with Guil-hermina Suggia and Fanny Davies, and performed with Felix Szalmond and Myra Hess. In 1946 she was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
