Began career as a New York model; debuted in film in Three Cheers for Love (1936); following auto accident (1939), had to have face reconstructed by plastic surgery; other films include Alcatraz Island, Mildred Pierce, Big Town, Big Jim McLain, Three Sailors and a Girl, Guys and Dolls and The Alamo.
