Hymenomycetes (subdivision Basidiomycotina) A large class of fungi in which the basidia are typically organized into a hymenium that is exposed only at maturity. Basidiospores are discharged forcibly when mature. There are two subclasses. The class includes most of the fungi familiar as mushrooms, toadstools, bracket fungi, jelly fungi, etc.
