SIDELIGHTS: Timothy Hyman once told CA: "For the past twenty years I've been in the awkward category of a 'painter who writes.' Most of my energies have been devoted to painting (which remains my chief source of income). I began to write as a crusader—in defense of artists unregarded or misunderstood—and that remains my central motivation. Of course I am also writing about the artists from whom I have learned the most and to whom I feel closest, and that quest for self-understanding determines my critical viewpoint.

"The focus of my book on Bonnard is a subjective pictorial space—a new space for the self—which obviously links to my own practice as a painter. It is partly my interest in the representation of the city (that is, London) that now fuels my research on Ambrogio Lorenzetti and Sienese painting. For me, the writing and the painting are integral and interdependent—even if the gear changes are sometimes troublesome!"
