Japan Foundation, New York Doctoral Fellowship Program (Doctorate/Fellowship)

Purpose: To promote Japanese Studies overseas by supporting outstanding scholars in Japanese Studies conducting research in Japan. Focus: Japanese studies. Qualif.: Applicants must have completed all academic requirements except the dissertation when they begin the fellowship and are expected to have sufficient proficiency in the Japanese language to pursue their research in Japan; must be residing in the United States (if not U.S citizens); must have achieved ABD status by the time the fellowship begins. Scholar and researcher must hold a Ph.D and have substantial experience in research, teaching and writing in the fields of the humanities and social sciences; must be in good health; must be proficient in either Japanese or English; must be able to stay continuously in Japan for the term of fellowship. Criteria: Selection of applicant will be based on the criteria given: (1) Project quality, (2) Training academic history, academic rank or position, professional reputation, and accomplishments, (3) Former Japan Foundation fellows who have been awarded two or more Foundation fellowships will be put under particularly rigorous examination. Higher priority will be given to those who are expected to submit their dissertation thesis shortly after the completion of the fellowship; preference will normally be given to doctoral candidates under 35 years of age.

Funds Avail.: No specific amount. To Apply: Applicants must have completed all academic requirements except the dissertation when they begin the fellowship and are expected to have sufficient proficiency in the Japanese language to pursue their research in Japan. Higher priority will be given to applicants who expect to submit their dissertation shortly after the completion of their fellowship. Japan Foundation, New York Research Fellowship Program (Undergraduate/Fellowship)

Purpose: To provide opportunities for outstanding scholars in Japanese Studies to conduct research in Japan. Focus: Japanese studies. Qualif.: Applicants must be scholars/researchers from the U.S. holding academic positions in a research institution and must have substantial experience in research, teaching, and writing in their respective fields

of study. Criteria: Priority will be given to relatively junior scholars and researchers, and to those with less research experience in Japan.

Funds Avail.: No specific amount. To Apply: Applicants who have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency should complete the application materials and submit them to the Japan Foundation New York Office. Applications should be sent directly (by mail only) to the JFNY office. U.S. citizenship holders should use a different form, which is available in the nearest Japan Foundation office or Japanese diplomatic mission. Qualif.: Applicants must be established scholars, researchers and professionals; must hold a PhD and have substantial experience in research, teaching and writing in the fields of the humanities and social sciences; must be American citizens temporarily residing abroad (if not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, use a different form); must be good in health; must be proficient in either Japanese or English; must be able to stay continuously in Japan for the duration of the fellowship. Criteria: Priority will be given to relatively experienced scholars and researchers who are expected to publish their research results shortly after the completion of their fellowship.
