Students applying as creditworthy or with a creditworthy coborrower may borrow up to the cost of education with an annual cap of $45,000. The cumulative debt maximum for graduate students, including all undergraduate and graduate loans, is $195,000 for allopathy, medical, osteopathy, and dental students, or $142,500 for all other graduate or professional students. The maximum residency loan is $12,500. Repayment begins 9 months after graduation. For borrowers who have paid a guarantee fee, the interest rate is 0.25% below the prime rate as published in the Wall Street Journal. For creditworthy students who pay no guarantee fee, interest is the prime rate plus 0.25%. For creditready students who pay no guarantee fee, interest is the prime rate plus 0.5% Duration: Loan recipients have up to 25 years to repay, depending on the total amount borrowed.
Eligibility Requirements: This is a credit-based loan and is not based on financial need. Applicants must be 1) undergraduates studying acupuncture, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, or physician's assistant; or 2) graduate students working on a degree in allopathic medicine, cell and molecular biology, cell and molecular pathogenesis and cancer, clinical psychology, dentistry, neurobiology, neuropharmacology, nurse anesthesia, nurse midwifery, nurse practitioner, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, optometry, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician's assistant, podiatry, public health, vascular biology, or veterinary medicine. All students in approved health disciplines can apply if they are enrolled on at least a half-time basis and may borrow in their own name as credit-ready if they have good or no credit history and are U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens. Graduate students may apply as creditworthy or with a creditworthy coborrower if they have an established 2-year satisfactory credit history; have a stable residence and employment history; have sufficient current income to meet criteria; if self-employed, have been in business for at least 2 years; and are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have lived in the United States for the previous 2 years. Residency loans are also available to fourth-year graduate students who need funds to cover the expenses of interviewing and relocating for internships and residencies. Deadline for Receipt: Applications may be submitted at any time. Additional Information: There are no application fees. However, a guarantee fee of 6% of the total loan amount may be deducted from the loan check when the loan is disbursed for students applying as creditworthy or with a creditworthy coborrower. For students applying in their own name as credit-ready, the fee is 6% when the loan is disbursed and 3% at repayment.

Title of Award: Health Careers Foundation Scholarship/Loan Program Area, Field, or Subject: Health care services; Medical technology; Nursing; Nutrition; Occupational therapy; Pharmaceutical sciences; Physical therapy; Radiology; Respiratory therapy; Speech and language pathology/audiology Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Master's, Undergraduate Funds Available: The amount awarded varies, up to $4,000 per year, depending upon the needs of the recipient. The award consists of half scholarship and half loan (the maximum lifetime loan indebtedness is $8,000). Funds may be used for educational purposes only (tuition, fees, and books) and are paid directly to the recipient in 2 equal installments. The first payment is mailed in August; the second payment is made in January, provided the recipient has maintained at least a 2.0 GPA. All recipients are required to sign a loan promissory note. Loans are interest free as long as the recipient remains a student or for a grace period of 6 months after leaving school. After the grace period, the interest rate charged is 4% per year on the unpaid principal balance. Payment must begin 7 months after leaving school. Duration: 1 year; recipients may reapply.
Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a course of study leading to a certificate, diploma, license, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in 1 of the following health care fields: dietetics, medical records/transcription, medical technology, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, respiratory therapy, or speech pathology. They must be working on the degree required for an entry-level position in the appropriate field; advanced degrees are not eligible unless they are required in order to enter and practice in the profession (e.g., speech pathology, physical therapy). No correspondence programs at any level are acceptable. Selection is also based on academic record, statement of goals, work experience, and program completion date. Priority is given to nontraditional students (adults who either want to enter the work force or change careers) and to individuals with financial need who have few financial aid options. Deadline for Receipt: March of each year. Additional Information: The Health Careers Foundation was established in 1990 by the Health Services Corporation of America and the National Healthcare Coalition. Since then, the foundation has awarded more than $5 million in scholar-ships and loans to more than 3,600 recipients. For loans of 3 years or more, 40% of the principal plus accrued interest is forgiven upon completion of the first year of service, 30% of the principal plus accrued interest is forgiven upon completion of the second year of service, and the remainder of the principal plus accrued interest is forgiven upon completion of the third year of service. If recipients fail to complete the required service, they are assessed a penalty of up to 3 times the principal due plus 18% interest. Duration: 1 year; may be renewed.
Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to residents of New Mexico interested in preparing for a career as a health professional in the following fields: physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, audiology, pharmacy, nutrition, respiratory care, laboratory technology, radiologic technology, mental health services, emergency medical services, or other licensed or certified health profession as defined by the commission. Applicants must be enrolled or accepted in an accredited program at a New Mexico public postsecondary institution. As a condition of the loan, they must declare an intent to practice in a designated shortage area of New Mexico for at least 1 year after completing their education. Eligibility Requirements: Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and legal residents of New York for 1 year prior to application. The law requires that awards be made to eligible candidates in the following order: first priority is given to candidates who are economically disadvantaged and a minority group member historically underrepresented in the professions; second priority is given to candidates who are a minority group member historically underrepresented in the professions; and third priority is given to candidates who are enrolled in or a graduate of 1 of these state-supported opportunity programs: Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK) or College Discovery at City University; Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) in the State University system; or Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) at an independent college. Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to Texas residents who are either high school seniors in the top quarter of their graduating class or college students who have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must be enrolled or intend to enroll in an eligible academic institution in Texas to become a health care professional and arrange to be sponsored by an organization in 1 of the 174 nonmetropolitan counties in Texas. Eligible health care professions include medicine, dentistry, optometry, nursing, pharmacy, chiropractic, behavioral health, and allied health (rehabilitative services, radiology technician, medical laboratory technician, health systems management, and dietary and nutritional services). Eligible sponsoring organizations include local hospitals, rural health clinics, and community organizations. Funds are awarded on a competitive basis. Of those, 60 are chosen as regional finalists (5 individuals and 5 teams in each of the 6 regions). Then 12 regional winners (1 individual and 1 team) are selected in the regional competitions, and they become the national finalists. Funds Available: At the regional level, finalists receive $1,000 scholarships, both as individuals and members of teams. Individual regional winners receive $3,000 scholarships. Winning regional teams receive $6,000 scholarships to be divided among the team members. Those regional winners then receive additional scholarships as national finalists. In the national competition. first-place winners receive an additional $100,000 scholarship, second place an additional $50,000 scholarship, third place an additional $40,000 scholarship, fourth place an additional $30,000 scholarship, fifth place an additional $20,000 scholar-ship, and sixth place an additional $10,000 scholarship. Those national awards are provided both to individuals and to teams to be divided equally among team members. Scholarship money is sent directly to the recipient's college or university to cover undergraduate and/or graduate educational expenses. Schools with regional finalists receive a $2,000 award to be used to support science, mathematics, and technology programs in their schools. Duration: The competition is held annually.
Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to high school seniors who are legal or permanent U.S. residents. They must be enrolled in a high school in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Wake and Midway Islands, or the Marianas. U.S. high school students enrolled in a Department of Defense dependents school, an accredited overseas American or international school, a foreign school as an exchange student, or a foreign school because their parent(s) live and work abroad are also eligible. Students being home-schooled qualify if they obtain the endorsement of the school district official responsible for such programs. Research projects may be submitted in mathematics and the biological and physical sciences, or involve combinations of disciplines, such as astrophysics, biochemistry, bioengineering, biology, biophysics, botany, chemistry, computer science, civil engineering, earth and atmospheric science engineering, electrical engineering, environmental sciences, fluid dynamics, genetics, geology, materials science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, nutritional science, physics, toxicology, and virology. Both individual and team projects (2 or 3 members) may be entered. All team members must meet the eligibility requirements. Team projects may include seniors, but that is not a requirement. Competition entrants must submit a detailed report on their research project, including a description of the purpose of the research, rationale for the research, pertinent scientific literature, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion. All projects must be endorsed by a sponsoring high school (except home-schooled students, who obtain their endorsement from the district or state home-school official). Each project must have a project advisor or mentor who is a member of the instructional staff or a person approved by the endorsing high school. There are 3 judging phases to the competition. An initial review panel selects outstanding research projects from 6 different regions of the country. The students submitting these projects are identified as regional semifinalists. Out of those, the highest-rated projects from each region are selected and the students who submitted them are recognized as regional finalists. For the next phase, the regional finalists are offered all-expense paid trips to the regional competition on the campus of a regional university partner, where their projects are reviewed by a panel of judges appointed by the host institution. Regional finalists are required to prepare a poster display of their research project, make an oral presentation about the research and research findings, and respond to questions from the judges. The top-rated individual and the top-rated team project in each region are selected as regional winners to represent the region in the national competition as national finalists. At that competition, the national finalists again display their projects, make oral presentations, and respond to judges' questions. At each phase, selection is based on clarity of expression, comprehensiveness, creativity, field knowledge, future work, interpretation, literature review, presentation, scientific importance, and validity.
