Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in or entering their senior undergraduate year or any year of graduate or professional school at a college or university in Michigan. They must be full-time students preparing for a career in air pollution control, toxic and/or hazardous waste management, or another environmental area. Preferred courses of study include engineering, physical or natural sciences, public health, law, and natural resources. Selection is based on academic achievement (at least a 3.0 GPA), a paper (between 500 and 600 words) on career interests and objectives, extracurricular activities, and financial need. Eligibility Requirements: This competition is open to students enrolled full or part time in a baccalaureate or higher degree health professions education program in a school that is affiliated, through a participating professional association, with the Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP). Applicants must submit a proposal, up to 2,500 words, for 1) an innovative health promotion project focusing on a special population group, or 2) a disease prevention project for a targeted community. They must be citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States and attending a U.S. college or university. Papers may be entered in the single discipline category (for 1 or more authors in the same discipline) or the interprofessional category (for students from 2 or more different health profession disciplines collaborating on a single project). Proposals for new projects, as well as completed or currently implemented projects, are acceptable. They may have been developed to meet course requirements or as part of service learning or other academic experiences. Basic or clinical research proposals are not eligible. Students first submit their papers to a faculty sponsor or representative at their school; each school, college, or program selects 1 single discipline paper and 1 interprofessional paper and submits those to the appropriate professional association. Each association then selects up to 10 of its best papers to be forwarded to the program administrator, and a selection committee chooses 10 top entries for the single discipline category and 10 top entries for the interprofessional category. Selection is based on 1) clarity of problem statement, objectives, implementation plan, project significance, soundness of evaluation plan, and reasonableness of budget; 2) innovation in approach to health promotion or disease prevention; 3) feasibility of approach in regard to implementation of the project; and 4) potential impact on a community or target population. Final selection of winners is then made by senior staff of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Deadline for Receipt: Students must submit entries to their school by mid-February of each year; schools must forward winners to the respective professional associations by mid-March; associations forward their top entries to the program administrator in early April; semifinalist entries must be received by DHHS by the end of April. Additional Information: DHHS established this competition in 1982; since 1998, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing has administered the program on behalf of the FASHP.
