With Karel Teige, he was one of the protagonists of the Devětsil group, and edited Život II (1922), which promoted Constructivism and Purism. His works include the Olympic Department Store, Prague (1924–6—one of the first reinforced-concrete framed structures in Czechoslovakia), the Machnáč Sanatorium, Trenčianské Teplice (1929–32—a paradigm of International Modernism), and the Czechoslovak Pavilion, Paris International Exhibition (1937—destroyed).
