Sidelights
A best-selling author for children, Sally Lloyd-Jones has penned over fifty books. As she explained to SATA, "I worked in children's publishing for several years, where my job was basically to come up with funny ideas for what books can do (pop, flap, bounce, rock, float, squeak, tick) and write stories and rhymes to go inside." In an online interview with Daniel William Cruver for Eucatastrophe, Lloyd-Jones commented on the craft of children's writing, particularly when retelling Bible stories, and noted that children's book authors are required to "distill everything down to its simplest form … using simple language [that] lets [the extraordinary] … through more powerfully."
As a Christian children's writer, Lloyd-Jones retells Biblical stories in a way that will encourage young children. In her Eucatastrophe interview, she discussed, in particular, her objective in creating The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name. "Throughout the mapping out of the book and writing the stories," she noted, "I was resolute in my determination to avoid even a whiff of moralizing in terms of applying the stories." Instead, Lloyd-Jones' Biblical storybook emphasizes the narrative aspects of the Bible so that young readers can "meet this wonderful Hero in [its] … pages."
In 2000 Lloyd-Jones left publishing to write full time. "My job now is to tell stories," she noted. "You mostly get into trouble for that when you're little, but when you're a grown-up you can get away with it—sometimes even get paid to do it! So far I seem to be getting away with it."
Since leaving publishing, Lloyd-Jones now predominately writes children's literature for the general market. Her picture book Time to Say Goodnight, for example, depicts the nightly ritual of an assortment of forest-animal children as they prepare to go to bed. Writing in verse, Lloyd-Jones weaves "rhythmic, even hypnotic language" that Booklist reviewer Karin Snelson noted will calm young children. School Library Journal reviewer Robin L. Gibson dubbed the book a "a sweet rhyming story," and a Publishers Weekly critic praised "the soothing predictability" of Lloyd-Jones' rhythmic text.
