Lloyd, Robert (Andrew)
Lloyd, Robert (Andrew), esteemed English bass-baritone; b. Southend-on-Sea, March 2, 1940. He studied history at Keble Coll., Oxford, then voice with Otakar Kraus at the London Opera Centre (1968–69), making his debut at London’s Collegiate Theatre as Beethoven’s Fernando (1969). He was a member of Sadler’s Wells (1969–72) and the Royal Opera at Covent Garden (1972–83) in London; also made guest appearances in Berlin, Paris, Hamburg, Milan, Munich, San Francisco, Salzburg, and Vienna. On Oct. 26, 1988, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Rossini’s Basilio. In 1990 he became the first English singer to appear as Boris Godunov at the Kirov Opera in Leningrad. In 1991 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Among his best roles are Sarastro, the Commendatore, Oroveso, Banquo, Boris Godunov, King Philip, and Gurnemanz (he appeared as the latter in the Syberberg film version of Parsifal in 1981).
