THOREN, Arne 1927-2003


OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born March 24, 1927, in Göteborg, Sweden; died of a heart attack February 22, 2003, in Össjoe, Sweden. Journalist, ambassador, and author. Thorne was a foreign correspondent and newspaper editor who later became Sweden's ambassador to Iraq and consul general to Chicago and New York. After attending the University of Gothenburg and the University of South Dakota, he took his first journalism job as a reporter for the Stockholm Expressen in 1949. During the 1950s and early 1960s he was a correspondent in New York City for Expressen, and from 1956 to 1977 he was also the reporter there for the Swedish Broadcasting Corp. He then moved up to the post of editor for the Göteborgs-Posten, where he remained from 1977 to 1980. Thoren next embarked on a government career when he was named consul general for Sweden in the city of Chicago, and in 1983 he became the ambassador to Iraq for his country. Thoren was an ambassador until 1988, when he returned to the office of consul general, this time in New York City, serving in that position until 1992. In addition to his writings for magazines and newspapers, Thoren was the author of one book, Fran Min Sida Sett (1968), written with Ulf Thoren.
