Stehman, Jacques
Stehman, Jacques, Belgian composer and music critic; b. Brussels, July 8, 1912; d. Heist-aan-Zee, May 20, 1975. He studied piano with Del Pueyo, composition with Jean Absil, and orchestration with Paul Gilson at the Brussels Cons., then was active as music critic for Le soir. He was made a prof. of practical harmony (1954) and of music history (1968) at the Brussels Cons., and also taught at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth. His music is cautiously modernistic, with engaging touches of obsolescent jazz.
