Stegmayer, Ferdinand
Stegmayer, Ferdinand, Austrian pianist, conductor, and composer, son of Matthäus Stegmayer; b. Vienna, Aug. 25, 1803; d. there, May 6, 1863. He studied with Seyfried, then was chorus master in Linz and Vienna. In 1825 he was made music directorof Berlin’s Königstädtisches Theater, then was conductor of a German opera troupe in Paris (1829–30). After filling various engagements as a theater conductor in Leipzig, Bremen, and Prague, he settled inVienna in 1848; was a teacher of singing at the Vienna Cons., and co-founded, with August Schmidt, the Vienna Singakademie (1858). He wrote church music, piano pieces, and songs.
