Schudel, Thomas (Michael)

Schudel, Thomas (Michael), American-born Canadian composer and teacher; b. Defiance, Ohio, Sept. 8, 1937. He studied composition with Marshall Barnes and bassoon with George Wilson at Ohio State Univ. (B.S., 1959; M.A., 1961), and then composition with Leslie Bassett and Ross Lee Finney at the Univ. of Mich. (D.M.A., 1971). He was principal bassoonist in the Regina Sym. Orch. in Saskatchewan from 1964 to 1967, and again from 1968 to 1974. In 1964 he joined the faculty of the Univ. of Saskatchewan, Regina campus (later the Univ. of Regina), where he was made an asst. prof. in 1966, an assoc. prof. in 1972, and a prof. in 1977. He became a naturalized Canadian citizen in 1974. In 1972 his first Sym. won first prize in the City of Trieste Competition for symphonic composition.
