Schüler, Johannes

Schüler, Johannes, German conductor; b. Vietz, Neumark, June 21, 1894; d. Berlin, Oct. 3, 1966. He received his training at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. After conducting opera in Gleiwitz (1920–22), Königsberg (1922–24), and Hannover (1924–28), he was music director in Oldenburg (1928–32) and Essen (1933–36). From 1936 to 1949 he conducted at the Berlin State Opera, where he was granted the titles of Staatskapellmeister and Generalmusikdirektor. He then was Generalmusikdirektor in Hannover from 1949 to 1960, where he conducted a number of contemporary operas.
