Schubert, Richard
Schubert, Richard, German tenor; b. Dessau, Dec. 15, 1885; d. Oberstaufen, Oct. 12, 1959. He studied with Rudolf von Milde. In 1909 he made his operatic debut as a baritone in Strasbourg. Following further training from Milde and Hans Nietan in Dresden, he turned to tenor roles and sang in Nuremberg (1911–13) and Wiesbaden (1913–17). From 1917 to 1935 he was a member of the Hamburg Opera, where he became well known for his Wagnerian roles. He also created the role of Paul in Korngold’s Die tote Stadt there in 1920. As a guest artist, he sang at the Vienna State Opera (1920–29) and in Chicago (1921–22).
