Rupnik, Ivan
Rupnik, Ivan
Rupnik, Ivan , Serbian composer; b. Belgrade, Aug. 29, 1911. He studied in Ljubljana; later in Vienna with Berg. His early works are in a neo- Romantic vein, with expressionistic overtones; later he abjured modern devices and began writing music for the masses, in conformity with socialist ideology. His cantata, Song of the Dead Proletarians, which he conducted in Belgrade on Dec. 14, 1947, is an epitome of programmatic realism. He also wrote 2 syms., several overtures (Romantic Overture; Youth Overture), ethnic symphonic works (Musical Impressions from Istria; A Peasant Evening Party), and a Hymn of Peace.
