Rosen, Nathaniel (Kent)

Rosen, Nathaniel (Kent) , American cellist and teacher; b. Altadena, Calif., June 9, 1948. He studied at Pasadena City Coll. (1965–67) and with Piatigorsky at the Univ. of Southern Calif, in Los Angeles (Mus.B., 1971). He made his debut as a soloist with the Los Angeles Phil, in 1969, and in 1970 won the Piatigorsky Award of the Violoncello Soc. of N.Y., which led to his N.Y. debut at Carnegie Recital Hall. He was an asst. prof. at Calif. State Univ. at Northridge (1970–76); also was principal cellist of the Los Angeles Chamber Orch. (1970–76) and of the Pittsburgh Sym. Orch. (1977–79). In 1978 he became the first American cellist to capture the Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow; subsequently toured throughout the globe as a soloist, as a recitalist, and as a chamber music artist; taught at the Manhattan School of Music (from 1982).
