Piccaver [Peckover], Alfred (b Long Sutton, Lincs., 1884; d Vienna, 1958). Eng. tenor. Début Prague 1907 as Gounod's Romeo. Leading ten. at Vienna Opera 1910–37; Chicago 1923–5; CG 1924; Salzburg Fest. 1927. Noted for smooth legato and noble phrasing. Returned to London 1937–55, giving some lessons, but went back to Vienna as guest for re-opening of State Opera 1955 and remained to teach.
