Nielsen, Inga

Nielsen, Inga, Danish soprano; b. Holbaek, June 2, 1946. She received training at the Vienna Academy of Music and at the Stuttgart Hochschule für Musik. Following her operatic debut in Gelsenkirchen in 1973, she sang in Münster (1974–75) and Bern (1975–77). From 1978 to 1983 she was a member of the Frankfurt am Main Opera. In 1980 she sang at the N.Y. City Opera. She created the role of Minette in Henze’s The English Cat at the Schwetzingen Festival in 1983. After singing Donna Anna in Stuttgart in 1984, she appeared at the Wexford Festival in 1986 as Amenaide in Tancredi. Her debut at London’s Covent Garden followed in 1987 as Constanze, which role she also sang at the Salzburg Festival that year. In 1990 she appeared as Christine in the Italian premiere of Strauss’s Intermezzo in Bologna. In 1992 she sang Gilda in Oslo, and then returned to Covent Garden as Ursula in Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler in 1995. She appeared as Chrysothemis in Amsterdam in 1996 and sang at the Vienna Festival in 1997. She married Robert Hale.
