Heitmann, Fritz
Heitmann, Fritz, German organist and pedagogue; b. Ochsenwerder, near Hamburg, May 9, 1891; d. Berlin, Sept. 7, 1953. He studied organ with Straube and Pembaur and composition with Reger. In 1912 he became organist at Schleswig Cathedral. Upon settling in Berlin, he was organist at the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche (from 1918) and of the Singakademie (from 1920). In 1925 he became prof, at the Staatlichen Akademie für Kirchen- und Schulmusik, from 1930 was Organist at the Cathedral, and from 1945 prof, at the Hochschule für Musik. Heitmann won distinction as both a virtuoso organist and as a teacher.
