Burrowes, Norma (Elizabeth)
Burrowes, Norma (Elizabeth), Welsh soprano; b. Bangor, April 24, 1944. She studied at the Queen’s Univ. in Belfast and with Flora Nielsen and Rupert Bruce-Lockhart at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 1970 she made her professional operatic debut as Zerlina with the Glyndebourne Touring Opera Co., and that same year she made her first appearance at London’s Covent Garden as Fiakermilli in Arabella. From 1971 she sang at the Sadler’s Wells (later the English National) Opera in London, and also appeared at the Salzburg, Glyndebourne, Aix-en-Provence, and other festivals. On Oct. 12, 1979, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Blondchen. She also toured widely as a concert singer. In 1982 she retired from the operatic stage. From 1969 to 1980 she was married to Steuart Bedford.
