Bursac, Marija (1921–1943)

Yugoslav war heroine. Born 1921 in Yugoslavia; killed 1943.

Joined Federation of Communist youth (1941) and Communist Party of Yugoslavia (1942); joined partisan forces as a nurse; as a fighter-bomber, was mortally wounded in an attack on the Germans, charging 3 times at a German pillbox; was the 1st woman to be proclaimed a national hero in Yugoslavia (Oct 15, 1943).
