Wells, Catherine (d. 1927)
English author. Name variations: Amy Catherine Robbins. Born Amy Catherine Robbins; died 1927; married H. G. Wells (English novelist, sociological writer, and historian), in 1895; children: George Philip Wells (b. 1901); Frank Wells (b. 1903).
Was 20 years old when she enrolled in a biology laboratory being taught by H. G. Wells at University Tutorial College in London (1892); lived with him until Wells divorced his 1st wife, Isabel Mary Wells (1893–95); apparently accepted with equanimity that husband was notoriously promiscuous with both long- and short-term partners; died of cancer (1927), after having suffered for some time (a year later, H. G. published her stories and poems in The Book of Catherine Wells).
