McWhinnie, Mary Alice (1922–1980)

American scientist. Born Aug 10, 1922; died Mar 1980, in Downer's Grove, IL.

International authority on krill, became 1st woman in National Science Foundation program to overwinter in Antarctica; studied biochemistry and metabolism of Antarctic krill at Palmer Station during austral summer (1975–76); served as chief scientist at McMurdo Station; spent 10 years working offshore (as 1st American woman) on an Antarctic research ship.
