British feminist and writer. Name variations: Emma Bullock. Born Emma Bullock in 1813 in Bristol, England; died of tuberculosis in 1851; m. Isaac Martin; children: 4.
Joined Particular Baptists and set up Ladies Seminary at 18; moved to London and became active in Owenite circles; became well known for public lectures on education and women's rights, and for igniting controversy through attacks on traditional marriage and religion; traveled widely as lecturer but settled in London and became midwife. Published The Most Common Female Complaints (1848), translations of Guiccardini and Boccaccio, and novel The Exiles of Piedmont.
