Logan, Martha (1704–1779)

American horticulturist. Name variations: Martha Daniell Logan; Martha Daniell. Born Martha Daniell, Dec 29, 1704, in St. Thomas Parish, SC; died June 28, 1779; dau. of Robert Daniell (lieutenant governor of NC) and Martha Daniell; m. George Logan Jr, July 30, 1719 (died July 1, 1764); children: 5 sons, 3 daughters.

Ran boarding school and reputedly managed family plantation; was assumed to be "Lady of this Province" writing "Gardener's Kalendar" in South Carolina Almanack (from 1752); contributed calendar to almanacs in SC and GA (to 1780s); ran nursery business after death of son Robert Daniell; writings published posthumously in almanac The Palladium of Knowledge (to 1804); corresponded with King George III's appointed botanist John Bartram, sending plant specimens from the New World to England.
