Basten, Alice (1876–1955)

New Zealand accountant and politician. Born Alice Henrietta Gertrude Basten, Jan 24, 1876, in Auckland, New Zealand; died Mar 6, 1955, in Auckland; dau. of George John Basten (coachbuilder) and Rachel (Lang) Basten.

Ran a secretarial and accounting business with sister in Auckland (1904–40s); also trained hundreds of young women in clerical practice until 1922; elected to Auckland City Council (1927); was a member of delegation to Pan-Pacific Women's Association conference (1934).
