Friday ★★½ 1995 (R)

It's “Boyz N' the Hood” meets “Good Times.” Ice Cube wrote and stars as Craig in this humorous look into life in the ‘hood. Craig's just lost his job and spends his time sitting on the porch with his pot smoking sidekick Smokey (Tucker), with the two getting mixed up in a variety of crazy antics involving their kooky neighbors. The laughs come at the expense of overworn cliches and sterotypical characters, but there's originality in the movie's energy and boldness (i.e. the local dope dealer is also the neighborhood ice cream man). To some, this “Friday” could be something to look forward to. 91m/C VHS, DVD, UMD . Ice Cube, Chris Tucker, Bernie Mac, John Witherspoon, Regina King, Nia Long, Tommy (Tiny) Lister, Anna Maria Horsford, LaWanda Page; D: F. Gary Gray; W: DJ Pooh, Ice Cube; C: Gerry Lively; M: Frank Fitzpatrick.

Friday the day of the week before Saturday and following Thursday, recorded in Old English and named for the Germanic goddess Frigga, as a translation of the late Latin Veneris dies ‘day of the planet Venus’.

Friday, in memory of Good Friday, was traditionally a day of fasting and abstinence in the Christian Church; it is also often traditionally regarded as an unlucky day, with Friday 13th being particularly perilous.

In Islamic belief, Friday is regarded as the day of the week on which Adam was created (as in Genesis 1:26–7).
