Centrarchidae (sunfish; subclass Actinopterygii, order Perciformes) A fairly large family of freshwater fish in which the first of the two united dorsal fins is strongly spined, the scales feel rough because of the comb-like edges, the tail is broad (deep), and the tail fin is slightly notched. The larger species, e.g. Micropterus salmoides (largemouth bass) may reach a weight of 8 kg. It has been introduced into certain European rivers. There are about 30 species, all found in the eastern half of N. America.
