MEYEROWITZ, HERBERT VLADIMIR

MEYEROWITZ, HERBERT VLADIMIR (1900–1945), South African artist. Born in St. Petersburg (Leningrad), Meyerowitz specialized in decorative sculpture. His main work was done in South Africa, where he pioneered in wood-carving and architectural decoration, such as the memorial doorway (1930) at the South African National Gallery in Cape Town. In 1943 he established the West African Institute of Arts, Industries, and Social Sciences in Accra with funds from the colonial government, and became the acting director.
