GOLDSCHMIDT, HEINRICH JACOB

GOLDSCHMIDT, HEINRICH JACOB (1857–1937), chemist. Born in Prague, Goldschmidt became professor at Heidelberg in 1896 and was appointed professor of chemistry at Oslo University in 1900. In 1929 he was back in Goettingen, but returned to Oslo when the Nazis came to power. He was the first Jew to receive the Norwegian Order of St. Olaf. His research centered on organic and physical chemistry, his best-known work being the constitution of aromatic compounds and the kinetics of reactions in organic chemistry.
