Goldschmidt, Harry, Swiss-born German musicologist; b. Basel, June 17, 1910; d. Dresden, Nov. 19, 1986. He was educated in Basel at the Cons, and the Univ. After working as a music critic in Basel (1933-49), he settled in East Berlin, where he received his Ph.D. in 1958 from the Humboldt Univ. In 1949-50 he was head of the music dept. of the East Berlin Radio, and then taught music history at the Hochschule für Musik (1950-55). From 1956 to 1965 he was director of the Central Inst. of Musicology. He publ. Franz Schubert (Berlin, 1954; 6th ed., 1976) and Urn die Sache der Musik:Vortrage und Aufsatze (Leipzig, 1970; 2nd ed., aug., 1976). He also ed. Beethoven-Studien (Leipzig, I, 1974, II, 1977, and III, 1975), Zu Beethoven:Aufsatze und Annotationen (Berlin, 1979), and Zu Beethoven, 2: Aufsatze und Dokumente (Berlin, 1984).
