CARAYON, AUGUSTE

Jesuit bibliographer; b. Saumur (Maine-et-Loire), France, March 31, 1813; d. Poitiers (Vienne), France, May 15, 1874. After ordination, he joined the Jesuits (1841) and spent his life as a procurator and librarian. Despite weak eyesight, he loved books and manuscripts. In addition to reediting some books on asceticism and ecclesiastical history, he edited a list of 4,370 works on the Society of Jesus in Bibliographie historique de la Compagnie de Jésus (1864) and a collection of Documents inédits concernant la Compagnie de Jésus (23 v. 186370, 187486).
