Caratti, Francesco
Caratti, Francesco (c.1615–77). Born at Bissone near Como, Caratti settled in Prague where he established himself as an architect, and used the first Giant Order of Composite pilasters in the city at the Nostitz (Nostic) Palace (1658–60). He developed the theme at the Černín Palace (1669–92), where the street-front has a huge range of engaged Composite columns set over diamond-pointed rustication, and the garden-façade has two enormous serlianas over which is a blind arcade, the whole set between two pavilions. He designed the Michna Palace (c.1640), with its beautifully proportioned centrepiece of superimposed Orders. He worked on the Lobkowitz Palace at Roudnice (1665) and a number of churches.
