Carapetyan, Armen, eminent Persian-born American musicologist of Armenian descent; b. Isfahan, Oct. 11, 1908; d. Francestown, N.H., Sept. 5, 1992. He studied at the American Coll. in Tehran (diploma, 1927); after receiving training in violin and composition in Paris and N.Y., he continued composition studies with Malipiero; then took courses in musicology at Harvard Univ. (M.A., 1940; Ph.D., 1945, with the diss. The “Musica nova” of Adriano Willaert, with Reference to the Humanistic Society of Sixteenth- Century Venice). In 1945 he became founder-director of the American Inst. of Musicology with headquarters in Rome and Cambridge, Mass., where he diligently pursued his labors until 1980; he served as general ed. of Corpus Mensurabilis Musi-cae, Corpus Scriptorum de Musica, and Musicological Studies and Documents, and was ed. of the journal Musica Disciplina (from 1946).
