Zachrisson, Julio (1930–)

Julio Zachrisson (b. 1930), Panama's foremost printmaker. Zachrisson studied in Panama under Juan Manuel Cedeño at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico (1953–1959), at the Vanucci Academy in Perugia (1959–1960), and at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid.

Zachrisson's prints, which include etchings, drypoints, woodcuts, and lithographs, are characterized by a unique sense of satire and sociopolitical commentary. The grotesque characters in his fantastic world are drawn from urban Panamanian folklore, Spanish literature, classical mythology, and personal experience. Since the 1970s, he has also painted these subjects in oil on wood or canvas. As of 2008 he lives in Spain.
