Zachow (Zachau), Friedrich Wilhelm, distinguished German organist, pedagogue, and composer; b. Leipzig, probably on Nov. 13, 1663; d. Halle, Aug. 7,1712. His maternal grandfather and father were Stadtpfeifer, and he received training in organ and as a Stadtpfeifer. In 1676 he went with his family to Eilen-burg, where he most likely studied with Johann Hildebrand. From 1684 until his death he was organist at the Marienkirche in Halle, where he also led the noted musical performances every third Sunday. Zachow was one of the leading composers of church cantatas and keyboard works of his day. He also was a noted teacher, numbering Handel among his pupils. For his works, see G. Körner, ed., F.W.
