Garay, Carlos (1943–)

Carlos Garay (b. 1 April 1943), Honduran impressionist painter. Born in Tegucigalpa, Garay studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in that city and from an early age became one of Honduras's few internationally recognized painters. In his formative period he often painted the human figure, but he eventually became known for his impressionist scenes of the Honduran countryside, which reflect an unusual mastery of light and color and a strong sensitivity to Honduran folk culture. In 1981 the Venezuelan government awarded him the Andrés Bello Prize. Garay's work has also been featured at the 2001 Chicago Art Fair and the "Honduras-Correa 2005" exhibit in Seoul, South Korea.
