Garaguly, Carl Von

Garaguly, Carl Von, Hungarian-born Swedish violinist and conductor; b. Budapest, Dec. 28, 1900; d. Stockholm, Oct. 8, 1984. He studied violin with Hubay at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest (1907–09) and with Marteau at the Berlin Hochschule fiir Musik (1911–16). After playing in the Berlin Phil. (1917–18), he pursued violin studies with Kresz at the Stern Cons, in Berlin and privately with Marteau (1920–23). He then settled in Sweden, becoming a naturalized Swedish citizen in 1930. He was concertmaster of the Goteborg Sym. Orch. (1923–30) and the Stockholm Concert Soc. Orch. (1930–40), subsequently serving as conductor of the latter (1941–53). From 1940 he also appeared with his own string quartet. He was music director of the Bergen Phil. (1953–58), Arnhem’s Het Gelders Orch. (1959–70), and the Sønderborg Sym. Orch. (1965–80).
