Franco, Guillermo (?–?)

Guillermo Franco (active mid-1800s), Ecuadorian military and political figure. Following the ousting of Juan José Flores in 1845, Ecuador entered a period of extreme political instability that culminated in the country's splintering into four regions in 1859. General Franco assumed leadership of Guayaquil on 6 September 1859 and signed a treaty with Peru conceding El Oriente to Peru in return for recognition of his presidency of Ecuador. As a result of this agreement, he lost popular support on the coast. The following year, in September 1860, Franco's forces were defeated by the army of the provisional government commanded by former president Juan José Flores. Franco fled into exile.
