Francoeur, Louis-Joseph
Francoeur, Louis-Joseph, French violinist, conductor, and composer, nephew of François Francoeur; b. Paris, Oct. 8, 1738; d. there, March 10, 1804. He became a violinist in the orch. of the Paris Opéra when he was14. After serving as its asst. (1764–67) and 1st (1767–79) maître de musique, he was its director (1779–81). During the French Revolution, he was imprisoned until 1794 when he was made administrator of the Paris Opera. He retired in 1799. His output included stage and other vocal pieces. He also publ. the treatise Diapason général de tons les instruments à vent (1772).
