kook·a·bur·ra / ˈkoŏkəˌbərə/ • n. a very large Australasian kingfisher (genus Dacelo) that feeds on terrestrial prey such as reptiles and birds. Two species: the blue-winged kookaburra (D. leachii) and the loud, cackling laughing kookaburra (D. gigas, or D. novaeguineae).
