Harland, Edward James
Harland, Edward James (1831–95). Co-founder of the Belfast shipyard Harland & Wolff. Harland, a Yorkshireman, was trained in the shipyards of Newcastle and Glasgow. In 1854 he moved to Belfast in order to manage Robert Hickson & Co. In 1858 he bought the firm with the assistance of the Liverpool capitalist G. C. Schwabe, and in 1861 went into partnership with Schwabe's nephew G. W. Wolff. A gifted and inventive engineer, Harland turned a small-time concern into an internationally successful business. He retired from active involvement in the yard in 1889, and devoted himself to Conservative and Unionist politics until his death. He was mayor of Belfast (1885–6), and Conservative MP for North Belfast (1889–95). He was granted a baronetcy in 1885.
