Freeman's Farm, Battle of

FREEMAN'S FARM, BATTLE OF. The Battle of Freeman's Farm is an alternate name for the first Battle of Saratoga, 19 September 1777, which opened in the roughly twelve-acre clearing that had once been the farm of John Freeman. Freeman had sold the farm to Isaac Leggett and gone north to join Burgoyne's invasion force. Leggett, also a Loyalist, was not present on the day of the battle.
