Freeman, David, Australian opera producer; b. Sydney, May 1, 1952. He was educated at the Univ. of Sydney (1971–74). In 1973 he founded the Opera Factory in Sydney, in 1976 the Opera Factory Zürich, and in 1981 the Opera Factory London. In 1985 he oversaw the British premiere in London of Glass’s Akhnaten. In 1986 he was producer of the premieres of Osborne’s Hell’s Angels and Birtwistle’s The Mask of Orpheus and Yan Tan Tethera in London. He produced the British premieres of Ligeti’s Aventures & Nouvelles aventures in 1988 and Reimann’s Die Gespenstersonate in 1989. Freeman founded Opera Factory Films in 1991. In 1992 he produced Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel in St. Petersburg, at London’s Covent Garden, and at the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. His production of Die Zauberflöte was mounted in London in 1996. He married Marie Angel in 1985, the same year he was made a Chevalier of 1’Ordre des arts et lettres of France.
