To recognize and reward outstanding participants in the Army, Navy, and Air Force Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS).
Title of Award: JSHS Scholarships Area, Field, or Subject: Engineering; Mathematics and mathematical sciences; Science; Writing Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Undergraduate Number Awarded: Scholarships are awarded to 3 regional winners in each of the 48 regional symposia, to 6 first-place finalists in the national symposium, to 6 second-place national finalists, and to 6 third-place national finalists. Teacher awards are presented to 48 teachers, 1 in each of the regions. Funds Available: At each regional symposium, 5 finalists receive all-expense paid trips to the national symposium, the first and second place winners are invited to present their research investigation at the national symposium, and scholarships of $1,500, $1,000, and $500, are awarded. In the national competition, first-place finalists receive $16,000 scholarships, second-place finalists receive $6,000 scholarships, and third-place finalists receive $2,000 scholarships (all national scholarships are in addition to the regional scholarships). Top finalists are also awarded an all-expense paid trip to the International Youth Science Forum, held in London. The outstanding teacher in each region receives a $500 award. Duration: This competition is held annually. National scholarships are paid over a period of 4 years provided the recipients enroll full time and maintain a GPA of at least 3.0.
Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to students in grades 9-12, enrolled in public, private, or home schools, who have completed an original research investigation in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics. Investigations reporting on experimental, field, observational, or applied research are eligible. Students present their findings at a regional symposium, held on a university campus in their area. At each regional symposium, selected paper presenters are chosen to receive scholarships. From each of the 48 regional symposia, 5 students are selected to attend the national JSHS, where 1 of them presents his or her research paper in competition for further awards. Additional Information: The JSHS program was established by the Army in 1958 and since 1963 has been administered by the Academy of Applied Science. Since 1995, funding has also been provided by the Office of Naval Research and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Observational, experimental, statistical, or theoretical investigations are allowed. Students must be the first author of the paper, but they do not have to be the sole author. Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to high school seniors who are legal or permanent U.S. residents. They must be enrolled in a high school in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Wake and Midway Islands, or the Marianas. U.S. high school students enrolled in a Department of Defense dependents school, an accredited overseas American or international school, a foreign school as an exchange student, or a foreign school because their parent(s) live and work abroad are also eligible. Students being home-schooled qualify if they obtain the endorsement of the school district official responsible for such programs. Research projects may be submitted in mathematics and the biological and physical sciences, or involve combinations of disciplines, such as astrophysics, biochemistry, bioengineering, biology, biophysics, botany, chemistry, computer science, civil engineering, earth and atmospheric science engineering, electrical engineering, environmental sciences, fluid dynamics, genetics, geology, materials science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, nutritional science, physics, toxicology, and virology. Both individual and team projects (2 or 3 members) may be entered. All team members must meet the eligibility requirements. Team projects may include seniors, but that is not a requirement. Competition entrants must submit a detailed report on their research project, including a description of the purpose of the research, rationale for the research, pertinent scientific literature, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion. All projects must be endorsed by a sponsoring high school (except home-schooled students, who obtain their endorsement from the district or state home-school official). Each project must have a project advisor or mentor who is a member of the instructional staff or a person approved by the endorsing high school. There are 3 judging phases to the competition. An initial review panel selects outstanding research projects from 6 different regions of the country. The students submitting these projects are identified as regional semifinalists. Out of those, the highest-rated projects from each region are selected and the students who submitted them are recognized as regional finalists. For the next phase, the regional finalists are offered all-expense paid trips to the regional competition on the campus of a regional university partner, where their projects are reviewed by a panel of judges appointed by the host institution. Regional finalists are required to prepare a poster display of their research project, make an oral presentation about the research and research findings, and respond to questions from the judges. The top-rated individual and the top-rated team project in each region are selected as regional winners to represent the region in the national competition as national finalists. At that competition, the national finalists again display their projects, make oral presentations, and respond to judges' questions. At each phase, selection is based on clarity of expression, comprehensiveness, creativity, field knowledge, future work, interpretation, literature review, presentation, scientific importance, and validity. Applicants compete by submitting samples of their work in 1 of 4 areas: 1) visual arts, limited to 2-dimensional work such as drawing and painting media, printmaking, and collage; no 3-dimensional works, photographs, or computer-generated images are accepted; 2) creative writing, as a sonnet, lyric, or narrative poem, up to 1 page; 3) drama, a 1-act play with a performing time of 20 to 45 minutes; or 4) music, a composition of 3 to 5 minutes for solo or small ensemble, vocal or instrumental, in any appropriate style. In addition to the work, they must submit a process folio that contains documentation of the planning and development of the project and a 1-page reflection statement addressing the intent of the work and comparing the final product with the original concept. A panel of professionals in the field selects up to 10 finalists, based on originality, creativity, and the correlation and implications of the process folio for the final composition. To recognize and reward, with college scholarships, outstanding high school students in a national broadcast scriptwriting competition dealing with freedom and democracy.

In addition to the 5 top winners, other scholarships included 2 at $5,000, 1 at $4,000, 1 at $3,500, 2 at $3,000, 2 at $2,500, 9 at $2,000, 7 at $1,500, and 25 at $1,000. Funds Available: A total of $145,000 in national scholarships is awarded each year; first place is $25,000, second $16,000, third $10,000, fourth $7,000, and fifth $5,000. Other state winners receive scholarships that may vary each year but range from $1,000 to $5,000. Winners in each state also receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the national competition. Duration: The competition is held annually.
Eligibility Requirements: This competition is open to students in grades 9-12 at high schools and home schools in the United States, its territories and possessions, and U.S. military and civilian dependent overseas schools. Contestants prepare a script, from 3 to 5 minutes in length, on a topic chosen annually but related to freedom and democracy; a recent theme was "How I Demonstrate My Freedom." Students record the script themselves on audiocassette and submit it for sponsorship by a local post or auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Scripts must reflect the entrant's own original thinking. Selection is based on delivery (35 points), content (35 points), and originality (30 points). Deadline for Receipt: October of each year. Additional Information: The first-place award is designated the T.C. Selman Memorial Scholarship Award. The second-place award is designated the Charles Kuralt Memorial Scholarship Award.

Eligibility Requirements: Eligible to compete are full-time juniors and seniors at accredited colleges and universities in the United States. Essays must be submitted by the college or university, each of which may submit only 3 student works. Essays must be between 3,000 and 4,000 words in length and on a theme of the student's choice that involves ethical choices. Readers look for adherence to design format, carefully proofread essays, well thought-out essays that do not stray from the topic, depth of feeling and genuine grappling with a moral dilemma, originality and imagination, eloquence of writing style, and intensity and unity in the essay. To provide financial assistance and work experience to students majoring in fields related to communications at member institutions of the Wisconsin Foundation for Independent Colleges (WFIC).

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to full-time sophomores, juniors, and seniors at private colleges and universities in Wisconsin. Applicants must be interested in an internship at the Manitowoc/Calumet County Chapter of the American Red Cross in Manitowoc. Preference is given to 1) students attending Lakeland College or Silver Lake College; 2) residents of Manitowoc County attending another WFIC member institution; and 3) students majoring in communications, English, graphic design, or public relations. Along with their application, they must submit a 1-page essay that includes why they are applying for the internship, why they have selected their major and what interests them about it, why they are attending their chosen college or university, and their future career objectives. Deadline for Receipt: February of each year.
